Transition Year Key Skills & Assessment
St Joseph's holds great pride in the quality and range of experiences that are afforded our TY students. The day to day class modules that our students participate in are key to this experience. Considerable time has been invested in developing an experience for our students that is unlike anything they've encountered in their junior cycle education to date and yet prepares them with transferable skills to tackle their senior cycle years and beyond.
Transition year is module based with students experiencing 4 timetables throughout the year. This gives all students exposure to the wide range of subjects and modules that are available to them in TY.
A major component of all TY modules in St Joseph's is a focus on 4 core areas. Under the umbrella of each core area each TY teacher decides on specific skills that the students will engage with, experience, learn and excel in over the duration of that teacher's module. Student reports will be reflective of how well they engaged with these skills.
The 4 Core Areas:
- Creativity
- Managing Myself
- Working with Others
- Communication
Teachers are encouraged to share they key skills that will be worked on/towards in their module to be shared at the very beginning of the subject along with the module learning outcomes and assessment criteria.
All subjects will contain a digital and oral assessment component and will be reflected on accordingly by class teachers in the end of module report for each student.
For each subject a student can earn a maximum of 3 credits. The credit breakdown is as follows:
0 = Yet to Meet expectations
1 = In Line with Expectations
2 = Above Expectations
3 = Exceptional
Awarding credits will cover the digital & oral assessment, participation, effort, engagement and completion of all other tasks/activities to agreed deadlines as set out by the class teacher.
The structure and detail of our subject planning in TY lends to a more meaningful learning experience for our students in transition year. The TY student is empowered with the clarity of knowing what is expected of them from the outset of a class and supported to achieve above their own expectations throughout the module.
